Objective

Clear every breakable brick on all eight levels without running out of lives. Reinforced bricks take two hits; everything else falls in one.

How to play

Keyboard

  • ← / → or A / D - move the paddle
  • Space - launch the ball
  • P - pause and resume
  • R - restart
  • M - sound on or off

Mouse

Move the pointer across the play area and the paddle follows. Click to launch. Mouse control gives analogue positioning, which is what most high scores are set with.

Touch

Drag your finger anywhere on the play area - you do not need to touch the paddle itself. Tap to launch. Large left, launch and right buttons appear below the game on touch devices. Keep your finger low on the screen so your hand does not cover the bricks.

What makes this one different

Brick Breaker Classic is deliberately the least eventful game on the site. The ball starts slow, the paddle is wide, only two power-ups can drop, and the level layouts introduce one new idea at a time - a pyramid, then a tunnel, then a fortress. It exists so you can practise the one skill every other game assumes you already have: choosing where the ball hits your paddle.

Tips for Brick Breaker Classic

  1. Hit the ball with the middle of the paddle to send it nearly straight up, and with the outer third to send it out at a sharp angle.
  2. On the tunnel level, clear the gap column first. Once the ball gets above the wall it will clear several rows without your help.
  3. Move to where the ball will be, not to where it is. Start drifting as soon as the rebound leaves a brick.
  4. Reinforced bricks show the hits they have left. Leave them until a fast, well-angled ball is already heading their way.
  5. If a wider paddle drops while the ball is on the opposite side of the screen, ignore it. Position beats power-ups.

Frequently asked questions

How many levels does Brick Breaker Classic have?

Eight. Each one uses a different brick formation, and the ball gets slightly faster with every level you clear.

Is my score saved?

Your best score, best level and best combo are stored in your own browser using local storage. Nothing is uploaded, and clearing your browser data will reset it.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. Drag your finger anywhere on the play area to move the paddle, or use the large left and right buttons below the game. Tap to launch the ball.

What do the falling capsules do?

This game only drops two: a green capsule widens your paddle for about ten seconds, and a yellow one splits the ball in two. Catch them with the paddle.
